This is our favorite mound drench recipe for ants.

This is our favorite mound drench recipe for ants. Mix away from the ant mound so as not to alert the ants you are coming. Sounds funny but it’s so true!

Pour the mixture from a container that can pour a steady stream directly into the mound center. After the hole is filled then drench area around the hole.

We strongly suggest a dried molasses application as well as beneficial nematodes for lawn and garden areas. The dried molasses adds nutrients to the soil as well as helps control ants. It’s a win win!! Stay tuned for more easy to do helpful organic garden hints!

These great photos were sent this weekend from some of our favorite “little Texas gardeners“. This great family spends fun family time finding great adventures in their veggie/pollinator garden. So much valuable learning occurs in the garden. These little gardeners were so excited to find a 🐛 caterpillar in the garden one day. Then all the sudden he was not there…. I can only imagine them intensely searching for him.

Then one day, surprise he’s back in another form! I can only imagine the smiles and joy on those little boys’ faces! Science in your own backyard! So much fun seeing the excitement in child’s heart over God’s amazing creation!

This lake house is perfect for gatherings and quiet retreats and was such a pleasure to design both the landscape and the lighting. I think our favorite part of this design was a surprising small area we created that instantly changed how they were living on this beautiful property.

Take a stroll with me to the lake. Imagine yourself packing up a blanket, savory snacks and heading to this quiet water’s edge to take in the sunset. As you breathe in the lake air, you can hear the waves lapping the water’s edge. You can’t wait to spread your blanket and relax. As the sun slowly hides behind the horizon you can now enjoy the moonlight and stars. Fireflies are flickering about. You are in another world away from the hustle and bustle. It’s so peaceful, you don’t want to leave.

Evening at this waters edge is now your favorite spot and if you live at this lake house you can’t wait to get home each day to recharge. What changed this spot? The right landscape lighting is there. It’s subtle and inviting and even the stars, fireflies and moon can be fully enjoyed. It’s as if you slipped into a Thomas Kinkade painting! This sweet spot that was a daytime favorite, is now their most loved evening escape.

Garden paths themselves can be beautiful passage ways when the right landscape lighting is carefully placed. They should feel both safe and stunning. This stone path has the character of the ripple stone brought forth as an artistic element relaxing the eye as you linger down the path. Today as I was working on a few ideas I happened to take note of the beautiful Monet painting image that is on the cover of my favorite sketch book. Many have heard of Monet, the famous impressionist painter, and his very famous gardens in the French countryside. It was these gardens that were his inspiration for his paintings. What I didn’t know about these peaceful gardens that he so well captured on canvas is that the gardens were just inside the walls of his French estate in 1913-1918 during WWI. It was inside these garden walls that he sat his easel and painted those peaceful tranquil images we have treasured today. However it was just outside those walls that the pain of war raged, artillery and machine gun fire could be heard while he was in his garden painting. Those peaceful gardens and easel stood less than 5 miles from the trenches where over a million men lost their lives. The sounds of war could be heard as he painted those masterpieces! During a time of great terror he still captured tranquility and beauty. What a great lesson to us all. Now more than ever our own lives need to be a canvas of a life well lived, full of hope and light for our families and Nation during these times of unrest and darkness. Today I’m going to “step outside“ in my own gardens and imagine what Monet might have experienced. Let’s grow strong character, embrace courage and share hope with whatever paintbrush God has placed in our hands.

Coneflower is also called Echinacea, a herbaceous plant that is part of the Daisy family. It is used to help prevent or fight viruses that cause colds and flu. Some research now is showing that it may even have anti-cancer properties.

Plant a plant that makes a difference to birds, pollinators and humans all the while making you smile as it sports it’s lovely happy blooms so characteristic of the Daisy family!

Planting a tree can bring so much color to a property in the fall and into early December. These pictures were taken this week in the Texas hill country just north of San Antonio. The flaming red colors, oranges and yellows are stunning along the highways.
